Under 9 Youth's Beaulieu Rockets 2 Cougars Youth 3 Wow! What a start to the season. The boys travelled to face old rivals Rockets where we always receive a warm welcome and a hard game. With the boys having limited training and no games on grass for a while I feared for the worst. My fears seemed to have been realised when straight kick off Rockets broke through the Cougars defence and scored. The boys then had to withstand about 10 minutes of Rockets pressure. Some great defending by Charlie & Luke ensured that Rockets were unable to score whilst they were on top. As the half wore on Cougars started to play some good football. The boys started to pass the ball around and some of the link up play between the midfield and strikers was superb. Jack, Paolo and Matt had several chances to score but struggle to shoot through the long grass at this end of the pitch and the chances either went wide or straight at the keeper. Rockets added a second when a long shot was bravely charge down by Charlie the deflection fell straight to a Rockets player in the Cougars area who fired home to make it 2-0 to Rockets. Some of the boy’s heads seemed to drop. This allowed Rockets to gain control again and they looked to have added a third when a well hit long shot was heading for the top corner only to be kept out by a brilliant acrobatic save from Ben. This spurred the boys and another flowing Cougars move was rewarded with the goal the boys deserved when a through ball released Chris who slotted the ball home to get the boys back in the game. Halftime Rockets 2 Cougars 1.After a couple of early scares in the second half the boys took control. Cougars equalised when Chris crossed low into the box and found Jack sliding in to score. The boys went in search of a winner. Chances fell to Jack and Paolo but neither could take advantage. With time running out Paolo burst through the middle showing great speed and strength he held off two defenders and fired towards goal, the keeper made a great save low to his left but unluckily for him the ball fell to Matt who coolly slotted home to make it 3-2 to Cougars. Rockets through everything forward looking for an equaliser in the final moments. The ball fell to one of their strikers who looked certain to score but was denied by a double save from Ben. Final score Rockets 2 Cougars 3A great effort from the boys today to come back from 2-0 to win against a very good team shows just how much they have matured over the last 2 seasons. Man of the match went to Luke who didn’t put a foot wrong in defence. Best effort went to Paolo.SquadBen, Charlie, Luke, Jack (1), Benito, Paolo, Chris (1) & Matt (1)
