Under 9'sWoking Cougars VS Abbey RangersSunday 22nd March 09This week the boys were back in action in the League having had the benefit of a week off but being awarded three points due to the fact that Feltham had cancelled seven days earlier because the tooth fairy did not turn up. Sitting fourth in the league but with it now being mathematically impossible to finish third, the Cougars were looking to cement their position and this week it was the turn of Abbey Rangers to visit Chez Cougars. It was the first team this season that we had played Abbey and having only played them once previously, in the final of their tournament in the U6’s where we comprehensively walloped them 3-0 in their own back yard it was going to be an interesting match up. The ‘Team Loin’ was in charge today. The ‘Team Lawyer’ had downed tools over the justified abuse and flack he was getting about his referring capabilities, or lack of. The ‘Loin’ looked like death warmed up. He claimed it was a bug but we know better, he had been clattered around the head by a handbag following his “You’ve got lovely hair” comment. Bug my butt, alcohol was definitely involved. The burger van was considering an Alan Sugar style take over. The sun was out the sky was blue; trade was good so all was set for a perfect mornings footie. First things first though who was doing the Oranges?? Lady Stanford’s rota had fallen to dis-array, it was so bad that she had to draft in Lord Stanford of RBS to simplify the formulated spreadsheet that had served us so well this season, never let us down, fool proof, excellent, fantastic and it was never ever last minute.com.John ‘Donal Macintyre’ Madico was poised to report, ready to pounce, leap, fly and run if required to deliver the perfect write up on what was going to be a compelling morning of sporting activity in the Amphitheatre that is West End Stadium.‘Posh & Becks’ had the starting line up all worked out; it was obvious what the strongest team was going to be today. We had Jamie in goal, Adam and his Ant (Xav) at the back. Sam, Dan & Lewis in the middle of the park and the ‘gangly No 10’ up front. The subs were …………………………hold on a minute there were no subs. We had this scenario at Mayford and look what happened. This was not time for reflection but time for tactical awareness along with pure blood, guts, fury and thunder. Ok with the scene set ‘The Loin’ gets us under way.The match got off to a flying start. Lewis had a shot that screamed just wide in the first minute. The boys were awake and up for this. Abbey started to respond following their early wake up call and the game was flowing from end to end with both teams looking for the break through. Unfortunately Dan had to go off with a knee injury early on and Benito had turned up early for the Youth’s game which was straight after this and being a wildcard he was allowed to take to the pitch.Unfortunately the first goal game against the run of play in this particular period of the match when Adam and Xav broke up a rare Abbey attack and the ball was bobbling around (a bit like Lady Stanford the previous night) and one of their players poked it into the net 0-1.The boys seemed unfazed by this and from the kick off resumed their attacking style of play which was rewarded ten minutes later when a long ball from the back come over the top of midfield to James who was three yards behind the two defenders but their was only ever going to be one winner. He caught and passed the two defenders and collected the ball and was bearing down on goal when unbelievably the Abbey goalkeeper decided to act out a rendition of Crocodile Dundee and went on ‘walkabout creek’. With an open goal James, finished coolly with his left foot 1-1.Shortly after this James broke free down the right and flashed a shot across goal which if Benito had been slightly taller would have gone in, shades of Paul Gascoigne in the Euro 96 semi final against Germany. The ‘Loin’ mustered the energy to blow the half time whistle and time for our own Travel Agent extraordinaire (Judith ‘Simon’ Chalmers) to unleash Tesco’s ‘finest’ oranges that no doubt were acquired from work. Time for ‘Noddy & Big Ears’ to weave their half time magic. The second half restarted and the Cougars again were the dominant team looking for the win. Jamie, Adam & Xav at the back were as solid as ever, Lewis was industrious and hard working throughout the match supporting James up front and tracking back all the time. Sam relished the role of central midfield and being involved much more in the game. He tackled very well and his supply was giving James plenty of ammunition to run onto. He tried to get the early ball up front as much as possible and he was breaking up the game in midfield when Abbey did have the ball. Benito was as solid and dependable as ever. He has started to enjoy the battles he is thrown into and it shows with his performances on the pitch. As the half progressed Abbey started to look jaded and they began to resemble Aston Villa on a recent trip to Anfield but without leaking the goals. Again Benito had a great chance to finish off the game but his shot went agonisingly wide and Abbey were saved and managed to salvage a point out of the game. Final Score: Woking Cougars 1 Abbey Rangers 1Manager’s Quote: ‘The squad is showing some real character now. A great game again and could have nicked it’.Coaches Quote: ‘A fantastic team effort from the boys’.Man of the Match – SamGoals – JamesBest Effort – The TeamMatch Report Compiled By: John ‘What lovely weather we are having’ Madico.
