U98Under 9'sWoking Cougars VS Farncombe WarriorsSunday 8th March 09This week the boys were back in action in the Cup and it was the turn of Farncombe Warriors, the reigning Premier League Champs and arguably the best team for many a mile around, to visit West End Stadium. The mighty Warriors had been annihilating most teams in the league this season and in turn amazing scores that would be more suited to a cricket team.Back in October the boys had lost 3-1 away to Farncombe in the league on what was a terrible bog of a pitch in awful conditions which did not really give for a good game. The ‘Team Lawyer’ was still under review after the Farnham debacle, amongst others, and this has now escalated from Local Government to PM level. He has only been allowed to referee while the outcome of the inquest is resolved on the understanding that he gives decisions similar to those in front of the Kop and “oh yes” nobody else wanted the flack. The ‘Fluffmeister’ was raring to go on the touchline and the boys were looking forward to the semi-final albeit with a little trepidation because of the possible outcome. The wind resembled something similar to Hobbsy after a Chicken Balti and a crate of Corona, this was going to play havoc today for both teams kicking into it, and so it was a question of who could master the conditions better. The burger van was doing a roaring trade, so all was set for battle to commence. The match got off to a good start with both teams looking to exert some form of dominance over each other. The Cougars were kicking into the wind and it was evident straight away that the usual big boots from Adam & Benito were not going to get us very far up the pitch and Farncombe started to get the ball out wide looking to get in behind the Cougars defence seeking an early advantage. They came close on a couple of occasions but fortunately they left their shooting boots at home and most efforts were going wide. With ten minutes of the first half left they had a break down the right and a cross was floated in towards goal and the wind managed to deflect it in over Jamie’s head, goal 0-1.The rest of the first half went by with no real threat but the boys were determined to go in at half time just one goal down so that they could turn the tables in the second half with the wind behind them.Step in ‘Mork and Mindy’ for their half time brief. With the wind now behind us tactical changes were made to enable us to play ala Everton aka ‘Hoof & Run’. Sam made way for James and Lewis was on in a wide role to get on the end of Adam & Benito’s long clearances. Jamie was in goal, as he always is and Ethan & Stef the other midfielders making up the seven. The idea was to bypass the Farncombe midfield and get the ball up front straight away to put them under pressure, but Stef was having none of it. He had risen from his sickbed having had only a couple of hours kip and took the game by the scruff of the neck. Wave after wave of Cougars attacks started to develop with James running for everything up front and Ethan, Lewis & Stef pushing forward to support. Ten minutes into the second half the boys were pushing forward and Farncombe managed to scramble the ball away to the edge of the box. Stef ‘the fox’ lay in wait and with the ball approaching him he unleashed a right foot shot into the back of the net. 1-1 great stuff. They were enjoying this, they had Farncombe on the rack and they were sensing victory. The game continued in the same vein and five minutes later the ball was floated into the box from out wide by James and Farncombe again cleared the danger or so they thought. Stef was waiting to pounce. The ball was cleared to about twenty yards out and as it came down Stef just watched it and he watched it and before it could bounce it was flying into the side netting of the goal. It was a mesmerising strike, unstoppable and worthy of winning any cup semi-final. Absolutely brilliant 2-1.Farncombe were not done though they had ten minutes to pull this one around. They were in unfamiliar territory, a goal behind and it was time to see what they were made of. The defence held firm and everything that came their way was dealt with admirably. The midfield was on fire and battling like Wayne Rooney at Craven Cottage. Not one of the boys were going to surrender the advantage and give up the chance to play our second cup final in two years. A fantastic win, well done to everyone including ‘Bert & Ernie’ who had done their homework on how to dismantle the atomic bomb that is Farncombe Warriors.Final Score: Woking Cougars 2 Farncombe Warriors 1Manager’s Quote: ‘Fantastic result for the team, the boys dug deep and fully deserved the win’.Coaches Quote: ‘We were Mustard’.Man of the Match – StefanGoals – Stefan (2)Best Effort – BenitoMatch Report Compiled By: John ‘Holy Moses’ Madico.
