U96Under 9'sWoking Cougars VS FelthamSunday 22nd February 09First things first, where was the Burger Van????????? How can anyone who is expected not only to put up goals and then take them down as well as write match reports, do this on an empty stomach?? Unbelievable, Outrageous!!!!!!!Following last week’s Cup Match against Guildford it was back to the league today with our first match up against Feltham this season. The boys were confident and looking for a result to get them into the right half of the table against a Feltham team who seemed to be leaking more points than usual this season. The ‘Team Lawyer’ was relieved of his referring duties today, Thank God, and the inquest is still ongoing with high level ‘deep dive’ meetings still being called as to his performances previously. The report from Specsavers is in and this will be scrutinised closely (or not in your case Barry). Having been suspended by the hierarchy within Cougars the duty of being in charge fell to Mr Jonathan ‘Champions League Next Season’ Griffin. The ‘Two Ronnies’ decided to alter the usual starting line up slightly and opted with Jamie in goal, Xav and Adam at the back, Lewis, Dan and Stef in midfield, Sam up front with James and Ethan as subs. No sooner had the game begun and the ‘man in the middle’ stopped play due to interference of a sort with reference to a four legged canine, if you get my drift. Not only ten minutes previously he had been bleating on about the very same subject to the ‘Team Lawyer’ and ‘Team Wench’. Hmmmmm worrying, watch this space on that one.Step in Monsieur Hobbs and a trusty Morrison’s bag to the rescue. I knew his vocation in life was not Management, and I think he has found himself at long last (but not his illusive wallet though, I’ll give you a clue Steve, try the Wife). It must have been nice for the boys to play on a decent pitch for a change. Some of the pitches at the away games we have played on this season have resembled something out of an Indiana Jones movie. I digress, the match re-starts and it is soon clear that Feltham are not here to make up the numbers. The game starts promisingly with both teams looking to attack to get an early advantage. First blood goes to Feltham though and after five minutes they take the lead with a fine move that leaves their central midfielder with the opportunity to sweep the ball past a despairing Jamie and he does 0-1. ‘Batman & Robin’ leave everything as it is for the moment and wait a further five minutes before sending on James and then Ethan. James is sent on with strict instructions to unsettle the big lad at the back with his pace. At this moment in time their defender is sweeping up everything in sight and the boys are not finding it easy to get past him.Stef was being asked to play a little deeper than normal, more in a holding role with the brief to get rid at all costs. This seemed to play into the attacking players hands as Dan and James both using their pace chased, harried, hustled and made a general nuisance of themselves. This eventually paid off in the latter stages of the first half where James received the ball from Ethan on the edge of the box, stopped, checked and drove a low shot on the turn towards goal. The goalkeeper managed to get his hand to the shot but his reaction was not as quick as Dan’s who was there to sweep the ball into the net 1-1.Spurred on by the goal the boys upped their sleeves for the battle that lay ahead in search of three vital points. Dan, Stef, Ethan and Lewis, in midfield were relishing this and were chasing, tackling and contesting everything that came their way. Adam and Xav at the back were defiant to the last in the tackle, breaking every play down that Feltham put together and Jamie was a solid as ever between the sticks gathering up everything that came his way.As the half progressed James was becoming more involved in the game relishing his task in containing the Feltham full back. We reach half time with the game locked at 1-1 and time for the infamous chin wag from ‘The Krankies’.The Oranges this week were supplied by ‘Lady Stanford’ at long last (first time this season I think) and refreshed, the boys were sent back out and immediately pick up the pace of the first half. Dan is playing a belter and looking to add to his goal tally and he does not have to wait long. Ethan produces some trickery down the left and directs the ball towards the penalty spot where James and Dan are ready to pounce. The ball deflects up in the air and Dan meets it with his head 2-1. Now the boys can sense victory and are pushing forward at every opportunity. Stef is working his position well and clearing the ball up field to James who at this point is giving the full back hell. The only way to stop him is bring him down, and this is what the defender is doing, and as a result we are getting free kicks in the final third of the pitch (it was at this point that everyone realised that the ‘Team Lawyer’ wasn’t refereeing as he probably would have waved play on, like he usually does being totally unbiased to the home team of course). I wonder if his eyesight problem is related to his fitness levels, in that he struggles to keep up with the boys on the pitch…food for thought and worth further investigation. All the boys are really playing well at this point and some of the passing moves they are putting together suggest that maybe the Team ‘mojo’ is back. No coincidence that it happens to coincide with the weather getting better. With roughly ten minutes to go Stef wallops a long one up field and the ball is being shielded by their defender who is trying to let the ball run out for a goal kick. James turbo charges his rocket back pack and hassles the defender and nicks the ball off him on the goal line, he looks up and crosses the ball towards the penalty spot where Stef is unmarked, bang 3-1. The final few minutes of the match are played out but no further chances are really created and Mr Griffin blows the whistle for full time bang on queue (take note Barry) and the boys fully deserved their win and the three points. How refreshing it was to see the boys come out of their annual winter hibernation period and going forward we know that this is the start of their run they put together every year. Well done to all and well done to Dan who was deserved Man of the Match.Final Score: Woking Cougars 3 Feltham 1Manager’s Quote: ‘The boys were fantastic, much better’.Coaches Quote: ‘Much better from the boys this week, they seem to be getting their mojo back’.Man of the Match – DanGoals – Dan (2) & StefBest Effort – AdamMatch Report Compiled By: John ’Da Wench’ Madico.
