Under 9'sWoking Cougars VS Farnham LionsSunday 18th January 09First things first, I whole heartedly would like to congratulate the person who came up with the idea of moving the burger van to its new location. It’s great to see it back and I can sleep easy on Saturday nights now. Well done. Since my last report a lot has happened on the pitch and due to the fact that this has not been communicated back, I can only apologise and offer my resignation as team scribe. We have played two since my last First up was Windlesham in the league whom we had beaten 5-0 a couple of weeks earlier in the Cup. Step up Ethan Losty who with his four goals and Stefan’s penalty, proved too much and give us a very good all round team performance which decimated the opposition. Another good 5-2 win, mind you yet another dodgy refereeing decision in awarding a penalty to Windlesham that never was. One day we will master this penalty decision malarkey, we hope.It was now back to the Cup and we were pitched against Mayford Rovers who put up a good fight in the first half but it was that man again, Ethan Losty who stepped up to the plate again with another four cracking goals. Again all the boys played well and into the quarter finals we marched with a good 5-0 win. Sam notched the fifth with one of his mazy runs through the whole of our team as well as theirs. That albeit briefly brings us up to date and back to today’s opponents Farnham. Our meeting at the beginning of the season finished in a 4-4 draw on their postage stamp of a pitch which quite frankly I would not graze hamsters on and that day we were subjected to some disappointing refereeing decisions to say the least. Basil and Cybil were hoping that the Christmas turkey had not knocked the stuffing out of the boys after three good results before Christmas and based on the last two seasons, asking them to get back into the flow of things straight away was always going to be difficult. But the promise of Wales’s finest oranges at half term prepared the boys for battle. The ‘Team Lawyer’ was the man in the middle today taking charge, or so we thought, of what was always going to be a tight encounter. With the boys prepped it was time for kick off. The first half saw us kicking with the wind behind us and both teams created few chances in the first 5 mins as they were getting back into the swing of things after a lengthy lay off. One slight tactical change, which came about at training on Friday, was for James to take some of the throw ins as he had demonstrated that he can ala ‘Rory Delap’ launch a ball with his hands. True to life after 10 minutes Farnham concede a throw in down the right. James picks up the ball and after taking a run up equivalent to Lightwater and back, launches the ball towards the penalty area. It goes straight to the Farnham goalkeeper who fumbles it and over the line it goes. 1-0 Cougars. Who this will be credited to is anyone’s guess!!!! But I bet it won’t be James, sums up his luck this season really. The remainder of the first half is very much cat and mouse. Xav and Adam in defence are holding firm and looking very solid, Ethan, Stef and Lewis in midfield are battling hard trying to push forward for the second goal and to be fair Farnham were pressing for the equaliser and it came just on the stroke of half time when they broke down the left and with a simple passing move the ball is struck by their midfielder with his left foot, low into the bottom corner of the net. 1-1.The ‘Team Lawyer’ blows for half time and a chance for Basil and Cybil to rally the troops aided by the master stroke of importing Wales’s finest oranges courtesy of Madam Hobbs. St. Lucia has sun, sea, sand and bananas, Barbados has sun, sea, sand and banks beer, Scotland has whiskey and a half decent rugby team, Wales????? Maybe by the next match report, I will have come up with something. So far this season, on occasions, the boys have tended to drop off the boil a little in the second half and it was important that we started this spell of the game well, especially as they were kicking into the wind.Barry ‘Graham Poll’ Losty re-started the match and no sooner had he adjusted his biting track suit bottoms, we found ourselves 2-1 down. I stood on the touchline thinking in these conditions (which we know the boys do not like playing in) complete capitulation coming up here. This spurred (bottom of the table again when going to press) the boys on and up went their sleeves for the battle. Dan, Stef, Ethan and Lewis, in midfield were relishing this and were chasing, tackling and contesting everything that came their way. Adam, Xav and Benito at the back were defiant to the last in the tackle, breaking every play down that Farnham put together and Jamie was a solid as ever between the sticks gathering up long shots with Farnham shooting from distance trying to use the wind to their advantage. As the half progressed James was becoming more involved in the game with our midfield breaking Farnham’s strangle hold on the game and being able to get the ball up front. Half way through the second half, James receives a long clearance from defence and being level with the defender but with plenty of space to run into, you know there is only going to be one winner. He collects the ball and ‘skins’ the defender, right foot, smash and 2-2.Now the boys can sense victory and are pushing forward at every opportunity. Ethan is working the left, Dan and Lewis the right with Stef in the middle playing the simple but effective passing game, looking to get one of the boys in round the back for the winner. Five minutes later James is played in by Ethan and surely, he’s through, that’s it, it must be our third goal coming up here, when he is savagely hacked down in the box just about to pull the trigger. Never mind we’ll get a penalty, the ‘Team Lawyer’ is in control here. He waves play on, can you believe it, absolutely outrageous decision. It was as bad as three yellow cards in the world cup, no it was worse than that it, was like being robbed in the last five minutes of the Merseyside Derby. Shame on you referee, your round on Friday then to make amends. This unfortunate incident, which is currently being rectified by a trip to Specsavers, did not deter the boys and even more so now they were going to win this with or without the referee but alas it was not meant to be as they could not get the third goal they deserved for a great second half performance. The ‘man’ in the middle, so to speak, blew the final whistle after a minute and a half of overtime, much to the travelling supporters, disbelief just as Farnham put together one of their few attacks in the second half. Our players stopped and were half way to taking the goals down when the Farnham boys had realised that the final whistle had gone and whether the ball was in the net or not the game was over.Final Score: Woking Cougars 2 Farnham Lions 2Manager’s Quote: ‘The boys played well and no sign of the usual seasonal hangover.
