Under 9'sFarncombe Warriors 3 VS Woking Cougars 1 Sunday 5th October 08Further to our opening 2 games of the season and with 4 points in the bag from 2 difficult away games on poor pitches, Cougars travelled to Farncombe Warriors, last season’s SPL Premier League Champions. Having had last week off due to Abbey Rangers being unable to field a team, Steve and Marc as well as the parents were weary of how this would affect the boys. How right we were, as no sooner had the game kicked off we found ourselves 1-0 down within the first couple of minutes. The goal game from a corner on the right and before the boys could react the ball flew into the net. Poor Adam who was sat on the sidelines due to being unwell and not being able to play, along with the rest of us must have thought ‘oh dear’ what are we in for? This seemed to kick the boys into life very early on and they responded brilliantly. Jamie’s handling in goal just gets better and better, Xav and Callum at the back knuckled down knowing they were probably going to be in for a tough match, Sam, Ethan and Dan in midfield were industrious and tough tackling, looking to get the ball up front on an exceptionally muddy pitch which did nothing to help our fluid passing game and James chasing and harrying anything that came his way. Ten minutes later, our just reward came with a brilliant ball winning tackle from Xav and a perfect knock up the left, which was pounced on by James, who ‘having left the defender to pull his shorts up’, smashed a beautiful left foot shot across the advancing goalkeeper into the opposite corner of the net 1-1.Now we were in a dogfight and the boys knew it. Sam and Ethan tackled anything that moved or stood still. Xav at the back seemed to relish the 2 on 1’s he found himself in, adopting the bigger the better attitude. The half time whistle blew, time for the infamous half time chin wag from the 2 top dogs and oranges supplied by our top Tottenham supporter Mr Griffin. Why do we have half time?? The 2nd half started and almost immediately it was as if the oranges tasted like a dodgy lasagne and the 2 top dogs must have bored the boys to sleep and Farncombe scored their 2nd. Could we re-group as we did in the 1st half and peg them back again? Unfortunately not, the boys were looking to get the ball forward pressing for the equaliser and got caught with a sucker punch 3-1 to the home team. The rest of the match was played at a stretch with the Cougars moving forward and trying to get something out of the game and Farncombe hitting us on the counter attack with the 2 players they left up front all the time.Jamie, Xav, Callum and Stef did everything they could at the back to keep things respectable with Xav putting in a deserved ‘Man of the Match’ performance. His tackling and reading of the game is very impressive for one so small but with the heart of a lion. Sam and Ethan worked tirelessly in midfield with Dan and Lewis under very difficult weather and pitch conditions. James had little to feed on today, however he did not give up and worked hard throughout. With the match over and our 1st league defeat since we lost to Farncombe back in March, the boys seemed a little down but need to bounce back straight away as next week we have our 1st home game of the season to the ‘old enemy’ Mayford who have yet to beat the Cougars and are desperate to do so.Manager’s Quote: ‘Slippery conditions, slippery pitch, slippery Ref’. Coaches Quote: ‘The boys let themselves down in the 2nd half’. Man of the Match – XavierGoals – James Best Effort – JamesMatch Report compiled by: John ’The Cat’ Madico.
