The team managed to get to the grounds, although at least one dad had a problem finding the ground – oh that was me…. The team consisted of Alfie, Barney, Ollie, Toby, Sam, Harvey, Myles and Ben, and had the “grown-up” leadership of James For the first game you would expect to see some team nerves but if they were there they never showed. Cougars dominated the first half with Sunbury only coming into the Cougars half 4 or 5 times. Sunbury seemed a physically strong team, and had a lot of presence on the pitch, but Cougars worked hard at defence and attack and frankly ran around them. As they got into the game some of the early season rusty fell away and we settled into some good football. Debutant Toby got his first appearance off to a flyer by swinging a strong cross goal shot straight in the back of the net. That really was all that could be said in the first half, and this picture really does show the concentration that our first half goalie (Harvey) had produce…we do not normally approve of swinging on the goal posts, but in this instance it really was all he could do to keep awake. Second half FC Sunbury came out on the attack in the second half, with a slight gradient sloping down towards our goal, we thought the edge might be with them. For the first five minutes we rode the best attacking play they could muster, but our defence of Sam, and Ollie held them away from goal and soaked it up. A few corners were conceded and apart from one cross pitch shot Barney who had taken his turn in goal, really had nothing to do either. Having soaked this up it was time to attack again and we soon scored via Ollie passing up the wing to Alfie from defence, who turned and crossed it in to the box where poacher Myles was on hand to take advantage of the goalies fumble to “poke” it over the goal line. Two up and great passing link up play! A noticeable difference came over the team with everyone wanted to be striker! Positions were forgotten (or at least put to the back of the mind) and it was like the magnificent 6 riding into town (at one time there was only one person in our half, Barney looking a little lost and every bit as bored as Harvey did!
