Under 8'sMatch report v Cougars Youth 23/11/08 A bitterly cold night with snow turned into a dreary wet morning as the local derby arrived. Forget Celtic v Rangers, this was far more intense. The starting 7 were Callum in goal (with several layers on to fill the goal more!), AJ and Louis at the back, Kier and Kian in midfield and Zak and Alex up front. Our Cougars kicked off although they all left the ball for each other, and started well with Alex taking the ball from a big AJ clearance, running down the touchline and sliding the ball past Cameron after 3 minutes for the opening goal. 2 corners from Youth were defended well, before we quickly counter attacked with an Alex shot saved and pounced on quickly by Cameron with Zak closing in fast for the rebound. Owen broke for Youth and went to the byline pulling back a great cross but no one following in for Youth. Kian, who was running everywhere, showed lovely skill down the touchline and after a long mazy run shot and another good Cameron save. We were now applying pressure, Zak showed all his skills in the box with drag backs and Kier hit the crossbar from a great powerful cross. And Kier followed it up after 8 minutes with a long shot that just crept in for 2-0. From the kick off Owen went for a direct shot that Callum was alert to and saved. A strong midfield tussle ensued until Louis hit a great long shot, Cameron made the save but Alex was on hand to tap in for 3-0 on 13 minutes. Despite being 3 up, Youth were still dangerous and AJ and Louis showed great teamwork in doubling up to tackle Sid and stop him on one of his powerful runs. On 18 minutes Sid went on a great run down the right and hit a hard shot which Callum had no chance with for 3-1. Kier then went on a great run and put in a hard cross before Sid went on another rampaging run before shooting over the crossbar. Half time and 3-1.Time to watch the half time entertainment, well stroke Rash's new dog, before standing by for the 2nd half. Zak and Kian off and Nathan and Joseph on for the 2nd half where Youth, stung into life from a half time pep talk from Liam the hairdryer, scored in the 1st minute, Sid this time on the left curling in a great shot which Callum had no chance with again. Youth were playing the better football now, stringing passes together but we scored on 7 minutes against the run of play, Alex going on a powerful run and finishing well for a 4-2 lead. Callum was called on to make a good save despite carrying an injury (looking like Chris Kirkland) but the pressure now was all coming from Youth. A shot from out the pack then hit the bar and rebounded on the line and out of the goal but the ref pointed to the centre spot giving the goal, when will goalline technology come in! Those in the Skysports studio will certainly review that one. So 4-3 and time for more Youth pressure, the valium needed on the touchline as the nerves were jangling. And then Youth hit another unstoppable shot for the equaliser (your earnest reporter had his eyes shut sitting on the toilet at this stage such was the tension!). 4-4 and the soccer world had never seen such an exciting match. Last few minutes and some great play from Cougars, Joseph went on a great run down the line and finished with an inviting cross which Alex scored with. 5-4. Youth pushed for an equaliser but AJ covered well at the back showing he is Gallas's ideal replacement at the Arsenal. The final whistle went and we could all relax having won the derby. It was an excellent game, both sides showing how strong they have become and the rematch next year will be just as close. Man of the match went to Kian who covered so much ground in the first half, Youth's man of the match was Cameron which shows how much we attacked.
