Under 8'sLeaden skies and the faint rumble of a dozen, lunch hungry, grumbling stomachs played the bass line on this day of two halves. A symphony of football enchanted the M.A.D.s (Mums and Dads), so intricately entwined by the master conductor, Nick, it drew gasps from the bewitched crowd with a formation incantation that silently tamed Staines for the first 10 minutes and built slowly but surely towards a total domination binding all together as though it were the last night of the proms singing in raptuous harmony Land of Hope and Glory! Such is the team ethic of the mighty Cougars.Alex in goal, Louis and Andrew patrolling the left flanks, Callum and Joseph up the Right side, Nathan in 'the pocket' supporting the effervescent A.J., proved once again that these brothers in muddy boots live and die for each other and are a unit greater than the sum of the interchangeable parts. Stoic by instinct, Louis and Callum absorbed the early pressure snuffing out almost every attack from Staines ably supported by Nathan who, by far, covered the most distance in a single match this year – tackling back, powering forward and popping up more times than Ant and Dec on Saturday night TV. The odd ball that did get through was no match for Alex in goal and his clearance kicks may well have been cause for alarm for the nearby Heathrow air traffic control. Joseph and A.J. combined well down the right side on numerous occasions with some narrow misses resulting from the sporadic pressure waves exerted by the Cougars. During one attack Andrew showed some Brazillian flare playing in AJ with a back heel but time again there seemed now way through the Staines 'Massive' defence. The first half was a battle all about control of the mid-field where Joseph and Nathan bonded the defence to attack but no ground was given or taken in a half of balance and grit.During the half time Jaffa brawl, Nick changed tack and looked to take advantage of the bewildered Staines. What other side has this kind of versatility and willingness to play wherever the game takes them? Andrew donned the goalie vest releasing Alex for centre forward duties, Louis and Callum gave way to Keir and Kian and A.J. was rested for Zak who took up position on the right wing. The ref blew the whistle and pointed to a nesting parakeet in a nearby tree to bring the second half underway. The superior fitness levels were telling as Cougars stole a march on the flagging Staines with interplay across the field giving extended possession to the mighty Cougars. Both Alex and Zak traumatised the ragged Staines defence with shots coming from every angle sadly missing their mark like the scatter pattern of Hans Moretti's knives narrowly missing his spinning assistant on a feature spot of The Paul Daniels magic show. On another day the crowd knew the score line could have been very different and a blind man could have been forgiven for thinking that it was Fireworks night with the amount of ooohs and aahhhs that resonated around the ground. The few occasions where Staines managed to break from their half Keir and Kian stood strong with Joseph sweeping up and feeding the hungry attack – the only Staines break of any danger belonged to the pint sized winger but despite his deft skills, he was no match for the three Cougars who descended on him with such pace and ferocity he may need help to steady his milk drinking hand this week. A break through looked on the cards when the ref pointed with his left hand at something over his right shoulder and Alex thumped the resulting free kick goalwards only to cannon off a defender. On another occasion Kian seized on the opportunity of a Staines' clearance to hammer a ball from the half way line and narrowly missed the mark with what would have been goal of the season. It seemed to be destiny that this match would finish 0-0 but a moral victory was taken back to the Cougar's lair that is the Woking suburbs. Louis, for his first half stoicism that helped pave the way for the latter domination gained him Man of the Match but the winner today was the team – the collective force and attitude that made every parent proud on this otherwise grey day.
