U85Under 8'sWoking Cougars vs Abbey Rangers, West End 10am 12-10-08With the mist lifting Cougars’ moral was high during pre-match practice. Louis started in goal and was destined to remain there, proving to be a safe pair of hands. Keir and AJ were in defence, Alex and Zak at the front, with Andrew and Kian in support.Initially a sleepy start from our team, although their pace quickened with an early looping shot from Kian almost tipping under Abbey’s bar. Alex took the resulting corner. The keeper knew little about it as the ball entered the goal hitting the inside of the net high up at the far end. 1-0 to Cougars after only 2 minutes.Abbey pushed more players forward and were rewarded with a corner at 5 minutes. The ball was away though, through an AJ clearance, and Cougars’ defence was by now showing the resilience and concentration that would earn one of them Man of the Match. The ball was back with Alex and, despite spirited defending from Abbey’s no. 3, he released a pass across the pitch to Zak. With presence of mind, Zak dribbled around the goalie and finished with a tap in goal at 6 minutes.Rangers replied, forcing a corner, and Cougars had to watch a shot from the edge of the box float narrowly over Louis’ crossbar. However, Cougars’ counter attack saw Alex fire a shot home for another goal, at 9 minutes.Following the restart, Keir’s defending was impressive and Abbey couldn’t find a way through our team’s box. The opposition decided it was time to bring on their ‘big guns’ making a double substitution. This resulted in a better, but not decisive, spell for Abbey, as Keir and AJ stood firm in defence, ably assisted by Andrew and Kian.At one point AJ saved a sure chance on goal as he focused on clearing the ball, alone amongst three Rangers.Abbey managed a long range shot 4 minutes from the end of the half, earning another corner. Keir’s strong header out was followed by a firm volleyed kick seconds later by the same player. The last, eventful, minute of the half saw Alex fire another shot toward the goal from the wing, only narrowly missing and drawing gasps from parents. This was quickly followed by Abbey’s closest effort of the half, the ball scraping the bar from a corner. The 1st half ended with Cougars 3-0 up.Half time substitutions meant Callum replacing Zak, Nathan for Kian and Joseph was on in place of Alex.Early on AJ accidentally clashed with an Abbey striker. The free kick faced a Range of Cougars that kept the ball away from goal at the cost of a corner. It came to nothing but the pressure on our defence was maintained. Seeing a dicey moment brewing, Louis took charge and instructed his defenders to “OUT IT!” They obeyed.A lot of the second period of the game was spent in Cougar’s half, although we were treated to some end to end stuff 8 minutes in. Callum was in action on the right wing and Nathan, Joseph and Andrew played their part, but the story was one of enforced defending, some scrappy, some calm and collected. Louis’s redoubtable services were called upon twice at 12 minutes. Nevertheless, Abbey’s persistence paid off with a deserved goal a minute later.Cougars seemed fired up again and Alex had come back on, replacing Andrew. A left wing drive from Alex resulted in a shot that brought a cracking Abbey save.Back at the Cougars’ goal Louis saved a high, on target, shot and gathered well on the edge of the box.Just before full time a super run with the ball by Alex, starting from his own half, caught Rangers unaware and he side-stepped the goalie finishing cleanly. An enjoyable & deserved 4-1 Cougars win and a well earned Man of the Match award for AJ.
