U12G9U12 G Home page Under 12 GirlsSunday 7th December 2008Walton Casuals Diamonds 2 – Woking Cougars U12G 2 (A.E.T.)(U12 League Cup QF) Walton win 1-0 on penaltiesCougars were dumped out of the cup in a dramatic and extraordinary game that stretched the emotions of the large band of travelling spectators to every extreme. The scheduled pitch was still frozen in part after a heavy overnight frost, so after some hasty phone calls we reconvened at another venue close by, the game eventually kicking off almost 1 hour late. The new pitch was a little smaller than normal, and this played into the hands of Walton’s route one football. But Terry was prepared. After the recent league defeat to the same team, he had made sure the Cougars defence had practised dealing with the long ball. With a hard pitch and sun in their eyes in the first half, the high bouncing ball was not easy to deal with, but the defence of Emily, Ashleigh and Alice had a superb game and virtually snuffed out the threat completely. The timid Cougars display in that game just 3 weeks ago was a thing of the past as the girls started spritely, and it was they who got the better of the opening exchanges. With Walton’s main attacking weapon thwarted, Cougars were able to play up the pitch and put pressure on the home goal. The Cougars passing game was splitting open the home defence time and again, and only the good work of Walton’s excellent keeper kept Cougars out. Eventually the pressure told and when Steph got hold of the ball just a few metres out she made no mistake. Walton responded however, and soon began to exert significant pressure of their own, creating several opportunities that were saved well by Lauren in goal. The game ebbed back and forth, developing into a terrific tussle of Walton’s long ball game against Cougars’ slick passing game. But just before half time, 3 Cougars defenders went for the same bouncing ball, failed to clear it, and a Walton attacker took her chance and slid the ball home.Walton took the momentum with them into the second half. A cracking 20 yard shot was superbly tipped over the bar by Jess, a halftime sub for Lauren, arguably the best save of the season so far. But Cougars were giving as good as they got, forcing the home goalkeeper into saves of her own. However it was Walton who took the lead when a quick counter attack was clinically finished. Cougars responded again. They took the game by the scruff of the neck and crashed into Walton, creating chance after chance. Surely an equaliser would come? It seemed not until just 30 seconds from the end of normal time, when a Chloe cross was deftly controlled by Steph, who having bust a gut to get into the box in the first place (in the last minute of the game!) then calmly placed the ball past a despairing home goalkeeper. Stephs’ best goal of the season – dad Terry certainly thought so. Unbelievable stuff. And so to extra time. New territory for all. There was no fear here though of being the first to make a mistake. Both teams went at it hammer and tongs, both teams had chances to win it, Walton denied on more than one occasion by each of the Cougars goalies making brave saves in front of flying boots, Cougars denied by a combination of good goalkeeping and wayward shooting. Somehow the extra 20 minutes failed to break the deadlock, and it was left to the lottery of penalties to settle the match. 3 each, and Walton scored from their second to take the victory. Cougars girls were devastated, but could hold their heads high after playing their best football of the season. Let me finish with one final Terry quote “Sometimes in football you don’t always get what you deserve but if you stay with that level of performance I’m sure you will be rewarded in your efforts at the end of the season”Player of the Match: Both goalkeepers, Lauren & Jess – Played 1 half of normal and 1 half of extra time each. Both made some great saves. Both were brave & both got hurt but both wanted to continue. 39WOKING COUGARSThe Football Family http://www.surreyfa.co.uk/ http://www.splsoccer.com http://www.scgl.co.uk/ http://www.make-a-wish.org.uk/ http://www.wphfc.co.uk http://www.jalosty.co.uk http://www.psrcoaching.co.ukThis website was created using MAGIX Website Maker You will need the current version of Adobe Flash Player to view it.
