Under 12 GirlsSunday 2nd November 2008Woking Cougars U12 Girls 5 NPL Youth 0(U12 League Cup 1st Round)Terry’s mid week call to arms e-mail had the desired effect as Cougars put in a dominant performance, repeating the score line of the same fixture in the league just 2 weeks ago. Defend from the front was the cry, and Cougars responded with a display of attacking football that left NPL well beaten.Cougars started this game with purpose, and were 1-0 up within a few minutes as Steph poached a goal following a shot that came back off the post. It was all Cougars in the early stages, and a second goal had to come. An error by the away goalkeeper was seized upon by Steph, who forced the ball home from close range to make it 2-0. Last year, all but 1 of Cougars goals were scored by just 3 players. The Cougars of 2008 have improved, their skilful passing game creating more chances. The girls have learnt to make runs into space, drawing defenders and giving other members of the team opportunities to score. Consequently, as well as the usual suspects of Steph, Emily & Chloe, we see others getting into goal scoring positions. Today was no different. Alice and Ashleigh shot on sight every chance they got, and Lucy and Megan keep finding room at the back post from their shared left midfield role. Megan came on for Lucy, Alice C came on for Ashleigh at the back, and Jess in goal was almost a spectator as Cougars continued to pressurise, but NPL defended resolutely and frustrated the girls until the interval. Terry demanded a more clinical approach at half time, and was instantly rewarded when Emily smacked in a 15 yarder just a few minutes into the new half. Cougars began to turn on the style and really got their passing game going. Emily was having a great game at right back, her distribution spot on, her vision excellent, and her work rate second to none. She was rewarded with a second goal, better than the first, a superb right foot strike from out on the right that gave the goalie no chance. NPL forced their first an only corner of the game near the end in an occasional visit upfield, forcing sub goalie Lauren into a couple of saves, but the best was saved for last as Chloe unleashed one from near half way that was always destined for the top corner.5-0 to Cougars, and we march on into the second round.Player of the Match: Emily
