Under 12 GirlsSunday 26th October 2008Woking Cougars U12 Girls 5 Epsom Eagles (B) 1Guilty of lacking the cutting edge? Cougars girls certainly were this week as, despite a good win against a 6-man Epsom, they failed once again to put the opposition well and truly to the sword.Despite the numerical disadvantage, it was Epsom who started the stronger, and only 2 very good saves from Lauren kept them out. The continuous rain and long grass made pretty football difficult, but at least in this first half the rain was into the Epsom faces. After the early scares, Cougars opened the scoring with a well worked goal. Lucy won the ball on the left, and fed Steph who sped into the box and slotted the ball past the keeper with a great finish. Soon it was 2-0 as Steph finished off a cross from Chloe. The third was an unlucky own goal from an otherwise outstanding away keeper, and Chloe added a fourth before half time after a great passing move. So, 4-0 up at half time, and Cougars should have gone on and imposed themselves on the away team in the remaining 30 minutes. But Epsom fought hard and ground out a second half performance that, if they had a full compliment, would surely have threatened the Cougars lead. As it was, Chloe scored a fifth after a neat pass from Lucy, but it was Epsom who had the last word with a consolation goal that they fully deserved.Ashleigh had another controlled game at the heart of the defence, Alice ran her heart out as usual, and Alex enjoyed her brief run out up front late in the game when she came on for Steph. Lucy made some good runs with some neat passes, Megan deputised well in the traditional swap over and Emily had a few threatening shots from set pieces.Manager Terry was happy with the win at the end, but rightly told the girls to take a look at the second half performance of Epsom as a demonstration of how to grind out a result. Losing the 50/50 tackles, not being first to the ball, not clinical in their finishing, Cougars were guilty of all of these once again. Still we must not complain, 7 out of 7 and sitting 9 points clear at the top of the league.Player of the Match: Lucy
