Under 12 GirlsSunday 5th October 2008Walton Casuals 3 Woking Cougars U12 Girls 6Walton finished top of the 3 teams that came down a division last year, so this was always going to be a good indicator of the overall standard of this years’ league. However, this reporter missed much of the action as he spent most of the time huddled under his umbrella. In filthy conditions, on a small pitch, the girls started strongly and went close a couple of times before Steph poked one home from close range to put Cougars 1-0 up with about 10 minutes gone. It was soon 2-0 when Emily found herself alone and in acres of space at the far post following a corner, and smashed the ball in past the keeper with a terrific right foot shot. Walton threatened occasionally, but Jess is really beginning to shine between the sticks these days, and anything put towards her was dealt with confidently. Her kicking out of hand is strong, and she was able to utilise the small pitch and launch several Cougars attacks with long balls into the opposition half.Steph is becoming a real goal poacher, and “taking a gamble” (quote from Terry) in front of goal, and she snaffled up another from close in to make it 3-0. Virtually straight from the kick-off Chloe got hold of the ball and smacked in a shot from 20 yards that gave the home goalkeeper no chance. Before long it was five as another Chloe effort found the back of the net, and the game was as good as won before half time.To be fair, Walton battled back well and scored two goals of their own before Steph completed her second hat-trick of the season to make it 6-2 to Cougars at half time. The second half was no where near as exciting as the first, but given the continual rain, as the pitch deteriorated, this was no surprise. Jess earned her player of the game award with a commanding performance in the full face of the pouring rain, dominating her box, showing good shot stopping skills and distributing the ball well. Terry was able to change things around and Vallie gave a good display when she replaced Emily at right back. Walton won the second half when they scored near the end, but it was too little too late and Cougars held on comfortably to make it four out of four this season.Player of the Match: Jess
