U12G2Under 12 GirlsSunday 21st September 2008Colne Valley 1 Woking Cougars U12 Girls 2Another hot September morning, another pitch with long grass, only 1 substitute and a team who came down from the higher division last season – it was going to be another tough test for a Cougars team who have been beaten just once in this calendar year. The opening few minutes of the game saw Cougars on the attack and force a couple of corners, but that was to be their best period of a first half dominated by a skilful Colne Valley team. They taught their visitors a lesson, demonstrating very effectively how good passing can open up defences and create chances, using set moves at corners and throw ins’ to continually threaten the away goal, and their speed to the tackle often meant no time on the ball for the Cougars girls. In fact, if it wasn’t for another solid performance at the back from Ashleigh, setting an example and orchestrating the defence as usual, plus a string of fine saves from Jess in goal, Colne Valley would have been out of sight by half time. Steph also impressed with a great work rate, continually tracking back to help out her defence. As it was, wave after wave of attacks from the home team couldn’t find their way through a dogged Cougars rearguard. For Cougars, chances in that first half were few and far between, their best effort a well struck free kick from Emily about 20 yards out well saved by the goalie. So, relieved to be 0-0 at half time, the girls began the second half with renewed vigour and started to get more possession. They began to get their own passing game going, and forced a succession of corners which kept Colne Valley pinned back in their own box for long periods. Despite this, the home team were still proving to be dangerous on the break, using their excellent passing and superior speed to continue to threaten the Cougars goal. Again however, excellent tackling from Ashleigh and further fine saves from Jess frustrated Colne. And then came the decisive few minutes of the game. Chloe had recovered from a first half knock and it was her pass into the box that caused confusion in the home defence. Steph pounced on the loose ball and slotted home from close range to put Cougars 1-0 up. Before long it was 2-0, a Chloe corner hit firmly into the box and met with a delightful side footed volley from Steph that gave the goalie no chance. To be fair, it was tough on Colne Valley, but they responded well and ensured a tense last 10 minutes with a deserved goal. Their long throw ins had been a threat all game, and finally one paid off when the ball was delivered into the Cougars box and smashed home from close range. But Cougars held on to make it 2 out of 2 this season. They have seen however how the skill levels in this league are improving all the time, and will need to improve on their passing for the next game.Player of the Match: Steph U12 G Home page 39WOKING COUGARSThe Football Family http://www.surreyfa.co.uk/ http://www.splsoccer.com http://www.scgl.co.uk/ http://www.make-a-wish.org.uk/ http://www.wphfc.co.uk http://www.jalosty.co.uk http://www.psrcoaching.co.ukThis website was created using MAGIX Website Maker You will need the current version of Adobe Flash Player to view it.
