Under 12 GirlsSunday 8th March 2009Woking Cougars U12G 1 Abbey Rangers (B) 1As we close on the business end of the season, the pressure is beginning to build as Cougars, top of the league since September, find themselves in a three way fight for the title.Coach Terry saw this as points dropped as Abbey, beaten 4-0 only a few weeks again, fully deserved their point. Despite missing captain Chloe through injury, and playing against a strong, biting wind, the girls had started with some urgency, causing several anxious moments in the opposition defence. Soon Cougars were 1-0 up as Steph found the net, forcing the ball home after an Emily corner. But just as Cougars seemed to be gaining control of the game, a defensive slip up saw Abbey equalise with a lucky long range shot. After this set back, Cougars never really regained their earlier dominance. In the second half, Cougars hoped to capitalise on playing with the wind, but in fact it was so strong it meant that passes were regularly over hit. The game became untidy as both teams struggled to cope with the worsening conditions. However, both teams had their chances to win it. We saw an Emily shot somehow stay out after hitting the cross bar. Steph had several chances close in; Lucy could have squeezed the ball in from the far post after a well worked short corner. Lauren Cowl enjoyed an extended run out in midfield, and distributed the ball well during her time on the pitch. Megan also played well when she came on for Lucy. Abbey could have won it as they were through one on one against Jess in goal, but she saved superbly. In the end, the wind won. Cougars will win the league if they win their remaining 3 games, but since 2 of those are against the teams in 2nd and third in the league it will go down to the wire.Player of the Match – Ashleigh – in command at the back once again
