U11 Youth Match Reports

County CupSunday 8th January 2012Woking Cougars Youth 4 v 3 Walton WarriorsGive me a ‘C’…….Give me an ‘O’……..Give me a ‘U’……….Give me a ‘G’………Give me an ‘A’…………Give me an ‘R’……….Give me an ‘S’………….What have you got??.............………..Quarter Finals!.......that’s what!Following a delayed kick off the match started pretty evenly with the majority of the play happening in the middle of the park. The Cougars first chance came from an Owen corner which was cleared by Walton Warriors (WW-that doesn’t stand for Weight Watchers Ann ;-) goalkeeper as far as George, who with an overhead kick set up Owen for the shot – saved. WW decided to take their chances next with a spell of good pressure that saw Harry clearing for a WW throw in which Adam got to first with his head, clearing again. The following throw in was picked up by a WW player who took his chance and scored – 0-1. Cougars continued to be pressured but stern tackling from Lewis & Aidan kept them at bay and a save from Callum was to follow. Cougars then decided to apply a bit of pressure with a couple of Aidan crosses, first to Owen, just offside, and the next for Lewis who shot wide, the boys underwent a bit of a goal mouth scramble but the WW goalie made 2 great saves. The Cougars first goal was created by Jamie who crossed to Lewis, who helped it on to Aidan to score – 1-1. Cougars maintained the pressure for a while with George & Lewis both having chances but unable to find the back of the net until another perfectly placed cross from Jamie found George who popped it into the back of the net – 2-1. WW decided it was their turn next and pushed up towards our defence but Jack P cleared twice with his head (and in the right direction – forwards not upwards!) and Martin battled tirelessly on the left wing. The next 2 goals took Cougars by surprise and were almost identical….high balls played up the wing which were won by the WW attackers and lobbed over Callum’s head -2-3. A perfectly placed third goal was scored by Benn just before half-time – 3-3.HALF-TIME – oranges, water and a tough team talk from the Manager.Initially the team talk seemed to have worked as Cougars came out looking like they wanted the win and within seconds a Jamie corner gave George the chance for a volley which just clipped the crossbar. Jack M tackled hard in the centre of the pitch winning the ball and putting some great long balls up the left wing for Jamie and Owen to run onto, but no goal. The Cougars had a good spell of passing and pressure in the WW box, but no-one was able to find the winning goal that we needed to avoid extra time. I think WW decided that as we didn’t appear to be able to get the winning goal they would have a go at getting it. This saw our boys dig deep at the back with AJ and Jack M solidly defending their keeper and goal but WW didn’t give up and came back again forcing more defending and some confident saves from Callum. After running his socks off down the wing Benn took an injury but luckily Super-Hero Sean the linesman-come-medic came to the resuce. Time was running out and still the winning goal was yet to come………..then it came……….an Owen special – SUPERB! – 4-3. WW continued to take their chances right up to the final whistle, however we stood fast at the back with some last minute strong defending.Final whistle Cougars 4 – Walton Warriors 3………………Phew!!The managers congratulated the boys on their win telling them “job done” – however he made it clear that it was “not pretty to watch and they’ll need to up their game ready for the quarter finals”.Man of the Match – George for his brilliant passing and for chasing down everything.Moment of the Match – Owen for his Wonder goal.
