U8 Youths Season 2007 / 2008 SPL under 8 Div 3

Farnham Dragons 2 Cougars Youth 3

The final game of the season saw the boys travel to play the Dragons. After Sunday’s heartbreaking defeat that almost certainly ended our title hopes Lorenzo was looking for the boys to end the season in style.

All hopes of an entertaining game were spoiled by the weather & a referee that made shall we say some bizarre decisions that always seemed to be to Farnham’s benefit. By kick off the pitch was severely waterlogged with lakes in front of both goals and in my opinion unplayable. The game kicked off and it was clear from the start that the boys were up for this one. Time after time they beat Farnham to the ball and tried to play their normal passing game. Unfortunately the condition of the pitch didn’t allow them to and despite Cougars obvious superior football ability the conditions turned the game into a lottery. Passes stopped short, players were unable to dribble and shots that looked goal bound stopped dead on the spot when they landed in the lake that had formed in front of the goal. Cougars took the lead when a long shot landed in the lake and Chris reacted well to force the ball home. A second goal soon followed a super in swinging corner from Benito beat the Farnham keeper at the near post. 2-0 to Cougars and at this point it looked like we would go on to an easy win. To their credit Farnham rallied and pulled a goal back just before half time when a long shot beat Ben at his near post.

The second half was very similar to the first with Cougars taking control and forcing the play, time after time they were beaten by the pitch conditions. Farnham shocked everyone by pulling level; some hesitation in the Cougars defence no doubt caused by the goal mouth lake was pounced on by a Farnham player who fired home. The boys managed to pick themselves up and tried to press the Farnham goal. With time running out and with Lorenzo trying to figure out why the football gods had deserted him Cougars scored the decisive goal. A cross shot from Sam somehow eluded the Farnham defence and more importantly the goal area lake and nestled in the Farnham goal. 3-2 to Cougars.

A well deserved win for the boys tonight. With better conditions I am sure that the result would have been much more in Cougars favour. No awards were presented as all the team worked extremely hard and had to cope with almost impossible conditions. A big well done to everyone

Beaulieu Rockets 1 Cougars Youth 0

The boys travelled to face the Rockets in a game that would go a long way in deciding the title race.

The game kicked off and it was clear from the start the both teams were very evenly matched. Rockets made the initial running and forced a series of corners that we defended well. Ben was forced into two saves from fierce shots from distance. As the half wore on Cougars started to look the better side. Chris was causing havoc down the left and he put in a superb cross that just eluded both Archie & Jack. Cougars went close when Matthew fired in a shot just wide from a well worked corner. Archie showed great strength in holding off a defender but saw his shot go over the bar. Half time came with the scores still level.

The deciding moment of the game came when Rockets went ahead straight from the kick off. A well crafted moved down our left found a Rocket’s striker just outside the box who hit a powerful shot which despite Ben’s best effort dropped agonisingly into the Cougars goal. Lorenzo tried to rally the troops and to their credit they all gave 100 % and didn’t let their heads drop. For the rest of the game both teams attacked each other and we saw from both teams some good passing and excellent defending. The boys tried desperately for an equalizer. With time running out 2 shots went straight at the Rockets keeper and one brushed the post and went wide. When we played the ball into the Rockets area time after time the ball just wouldn’t fall to a Cougars player. The game finished 1-0 to Beaulieu Rockets, the boys deserved to get something out of this game but it just wasn’t to be.

The boys can all be very proud of themselves today. Despite a loss that ends our title hopes they all gave 100 % and never let their heads drop.

Man of the match went to Archie who never stopped running and best effort went to Benito who gave his all in midfield.

Cougars Youth  0 Guildford FC 2000 4

The boys hosted Guildford in a crucial top of the table clash. The reverse fixture earlier in the season had ended in a thrilling 0-0 draw and everyone was looking forward to the return match. The mood in the Cougars camp was that we would have a slight advantage playing at home on our larger pitch. How wrong we were.

Outfought, outplayed and outclassed are three words that I didn’t expect to aim at the boys this season but today we were played off the park by a superb performance by Guildford.

The danger signs were there from the start Guildford were quicker to the ball and seemed to want it more than our boys. Guildford pushed us back and only some last ditch defending and superb goalkeeping from Ben kept them out. Guildford made the deserved breakthrough when their number 6 picked up the ball just outside the Cougars area and fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner. Guildford continued to force the play and almost added a second a low shot looked destined for the corner only to be kept out by a superb save by Ben. Guildford added a second on the stroke of half time when an in swinging corner was deflected into the Cougars goal. Half time 0-2.

The boys did improve after the break and did put more pressure onto Guildford but time after time found their way blocked by Guildford’s excellent number 3 who seemed to have the measure of our strikers. At the other end Guildford always looked dangerous and hit us twice when we tried to push forward. On both occasions they had outnumbered our defenders took advantage with some excellent passing to score two further goals both leaving Ben with no chance. The closest we came to scoring was two long range efforts from Paolo.

The game finished 4-0 to Guildford by far our heaviest defeat of the season and our first home defeat.

Man of the match went to Ben who made a series of superb saves to keep the score respectable. Best effort went to Luke & Charlie.

Squad - Ben, Jack, Luke, Benito, Paolo, Chris, Matt, Archie & Charlie

2/3/08 Woking Cougars Youth 3 Fleet Town Kestrels 0

The boys hosted a Fleets side whose recent results suggested they would provide a stiff test.

Cougars gained the upper hand from the kick off and forced the play. Despite having a lot of possession the boys were unable to create any clear chances. Half chances fell to Matt and Jack who both fired wide. Fleet almost scored on the break when a fierce shot was well saved by Ben. Cougars finally took the lead when Paolo showed great strength and speed by racing between 2 Fleet players and shooting low into the Fleet goal. At half time Cougars led 1-0.

At the start of the second half the boys lost their shape and allowed Fleet to press our goal. Some good work by Charlie & Luke kept them out. Gradually the boys found their way again and took control. They scored a second goal after some good work by Chris who beat his marker and crossed for Jack to score into the roof of the net. Cougars were now in total control. Paolo twice shot narrowly wide when through on goal. Jack was denied by a good save by the Fleet keeper. A third goal came after Benito showed great strength to hold of a Fleet defender and then with a slide rule pass released Paolo who made no mistake this time and lashed the ball home.

The game ended 3-0. Another good performance from the whole team.

Man of the match went to Jack and best effort went to Matthew

3/2/2008 Cougars  4 Farncombe Gladiators 0

The boys kicked off the second half of the season with a tricky test against a Farncombe team who had held us to a draw earlier in the season. With things being so tight at the top of the table (4 teams potentially separated by 1 point!) a win was needed to keep us in the hunt.

Farncombe started the better and forced the play without really threatening the Cougars goal. They forced a series of corners which in the main the boys defended well. Only once was Ben forced into action when he saved bravely at a forwards feet. Gradually Cougars started to improve and forced Farncombe back. Some good link up play created several good chances the best falling to Paolo who shot narrowly wide. Cougars made the breakthrough on the stroke of halftime, Paolo’s fierce shot was parried by the Farncombe keeper, Archie reacted quickest to score with the rebound. 1-0 to Cougars at half time.

The second half was very much like the first with Farncombe starting very brightly and forcing the play. Some solid defending by Charlie & Luke kept them at bay. Cougars scored a second goal against the run of play. Chris rolled the ball to Benito from some distance out hit a shot that arrowed into the top corner of the goal. This spurred the boys on and a superb third followed, a fast passing move involving Chris & Archie found Paolo in space and this time he made no mistake and lashed the ball home. Cougars were now in control and Paolo added a fourth goal before the end. The one time that Farncombe did threaten the Cougars goal they were denied by a good save by Ben.

Well done to everyone today for a good win that keeps us firmly in touch at the top of the table.

Man of the match went to Benito after another superb display in the middle of midfield and best effort went to Ben who kept his 5th clean sheet of the season.

20/01/08 Cougars 3 Beaulieu Rockets 1

Cougars entertained Beaulieu in a crucial top of the table clash. A win was vital for Cougars who at the moment top the league but are closely pursued by a number of teams who have games in hand.

From the kick off it was clear that this was going to be a tough game, both teams looked evenly matched. Early on Beaulieu forced the pace with their number 3 trying to threaten the Cougars goal but some good work by the Cougars midfield kept him at bay. After about 4 minutes Cougars put a good move together and the ball fell to Paolo who with his trusty left foot fired home to score, 1-0 Cougars. Cougars gained confidence and started to force play. Some good passing moves by Benito, Jack, Paolo and Archie forced Beaulieu into some desperate defending. Cougars had a golden chance to extend the lead when they were awarded a penalty for handball. Benito’s well struck shot was superbly saved by the keeper, Jack on the follow up shot narrowly wide. When Beaulieu did break they found there way blocked by Luke and Charlie. The boys led 1-0 at half time but the game was far from over.

The second half kicked off. Some good passing found Matthew on the right who accelerated past the Beaulieu defence and crossed to Paolo who slammed the ball home into the roof of the net. This seemed to rock Beaulieu and Cougars took control. The forwards were passing to each other and only some excellent defending by Beaulieu kept them out. A third goal came after some good work by Chris when he dribbled past two defenders and shot low past the keeper. Cougars pushed forward looking for more, this allowed Beaulieu to play on the break and they forced a corner. A goal mouth scramble followed the corner and a mistimed tackle by a Cougars player led to a Beaulieu penalty which they converted. 3-1 Cougars. The last few minutes of the game saw both teams pushing for goals, Ben managed to parry a shot that then looped over him and seemed to be rolling into the goal but he somehow recovered to smoother the ball on the line.

The game finished with a vital Cougars win. The boys played some excellent passing football and were worthy winners.

Man of the match went to Luke who was superb at the back and best effort went to Matthew who put in some excellent work in the second half.

6/01/08 Abbey Rangers 1 Cougars 5

The first game of the year saw the boys face a tricky looking away game against a team who were just below us in the league.

Cougars almost scored straight from the kick off when Benito burst up the middle and shot narrowly wide. The boys forced the play but were unable to really test the Abbey keeper. Paolo and the Abbey number 6 were involved in a titanic battle on the left wing.

The first goal was going to be important and it came from an unlikely source. A Cougars corner fell to Jack on the edge of the area he turned and shot with his left foot and fired home for his first ever goal. This spurred Cougars on and the boys pushed Abbey back. A second goal followed when Archie reacting to his own flick on from a throw in out muscled the Abbey defence and stroked the ball home past the Abbey keeper. Abbey almost pulled a goal back just before the break but some good handling by Ben denied them. Half time and Cougars led 2-0. Despite our advantage Abbey were still very much in the game.

Abbey again nearly scored shortly after the kick off when Cougars stood off and allowed the Abbey forward time and space to shoot narrowly wide. Cougars scored a much needed third goal when Paolo reacted to a weak goal kick and fired home. A fourth goal followed following some excellent play, Matt passed the ball to Archie who in turn found Paolo on the edge of the area. Paolo looked up and fired home into the bottom corner leaving the keeper with no chance. To their credit Abbey kept going and were rewarded with a goal when one of there forwards scored after some hesitation in the Cougars defence and could have scored again but were denied but some good work by Ben. Cougars scored a fifth goal when Archie reacted quickest to a loose ball and fired home. More chances fell to Cougars with both Jack and Matt forcing the Abbey keeper into saves. At the other end Benito, Luke and Charlie superbly marshalled the Cougars defence.

A great performance by the boys against a strong Abbey team.  MOM went to Jack and best effort to Paolo.

09/12/07 Teddington 2   Cougars Youth  0

The boys suffered their first defeat this season against a much improved Teddington side.

Our task wasn’t helped by the fact that due to sickness we could only field 7 players out of which 3 had also been suffering from various ailments.

The game kicked off in awful conditions. Neither team were able to gain control as both sets of midfield attempted to win the ball. Early on it was clear that some of our boys lacked their usual zest and as the half wore on Teddington started to look the most likely to score. Ben was forced into 2 good saves to deny them. Teddington scored just before half time when their striker did well and outpaced the Cougars defence and fired home giving Ben no chance. At half time we trailed 1-0.

Lorenzo did his best to rally the boys at half time but it was clear that 1-2 of them were suffering the effects of being ill prior to the game. To their credit they carried on playing as they didn’t want to let their team members down.

The second half was very much like the first with both midfields trying to gain control.  Both teams probed the others defence without really threatening to score. Lorenzo switched the boys around in an effort to keep them warm. Teddington scored a second goal straight from a throw in when a wonder strike cannoned off the under side of the bar and into the Cougars goal. Charlie suffered an injury and was unable to carry on leaving us with 6 players. To their credit the boy’s heads didn’t drop and played some good football forcing a number of corners but were unable to take advantage.

We were all glad when the ref blew up for full time. Well done to Teddington for a win they deserved. All the boys gave 100% today in very difficult circumstances it will be interesting how they react to this loss.  Best effort went to Charlie who played much of the game whilst clearly under the weather. A big well done to both Luke and Benito who put in big performances despite being far from 100%. Man of the match went to Ben who again showed why he is Cougars number 1.

25/11/07 Guildford FC 2000 0  Cougars Youth  0

The boys travelled to free scoring Guildford in what looked like was going to be a tough test against a team that had been previously playing at a higher level. We were all surprised by the size of the Guildford pitch which was by the far the smallest the boys have played on so far. Lorenzo who was concerned that the game would develop into a trial of who could hoof up field the best asked to use a bigger pitch but this was refused.

From the kick off the boys found it hard to adapt to the smaller pitch with little space to work in and a Guildford team who were clearly full of confidence and closed our boys down very quickly. Guildford forced a number of corners but good defending by Charlie at the back kept them at bay. As the half wore on our boys began to gain confidence and started to threaten the Guildford goal. Both Benito and Paolo were involved in a physical midfield battle which they were winning much to the dismay of the home support who wanted a free kick every time they won a tackle. The Guildford keeper was forced into 3 good saves using his feet to deny Benito, Archie & Paolo. With so little space to work in both teams found it hard to get any sort of passing game going.  Half time 0-0.

Guildford stepped it up after the break and forced the play. Ben was called into action making by my count 4 top class saves to deny Guildford. Lorenzo changed the formation around and pushed Jack to right midfield. This seemed to help the boys out as they gradually started to get back into the game as an attacking force. On 3 occasion’s Jack went on runs along the right out pacing the Guildford players only to be denied by some great last ditch defending by Guildford. As the final whistle approached both teams tried to grab the 3pts. Guildford went close when their striker fired wide form 5 yards and a run and cross by Jack flashed agonisingly across the Guildford goal mouth.

The final whistle went and the game finished 0-0. Both sets having given 100% and neither deserved to loose. I have to say well done to the ref who despite a lot of pressure from the home support managed the game very fairly.

Man of the match went to Ben who had his busiest game by far and produced a number of good saves. Best effort went to Jack who when moved to right midfield was Cougars biggest attacking threat.

Squad - Ben, Jack, Luke, Benito, Paolo, Chris, Matt, Archie & Charlie

23 / 11 /07 Meadow Sports A 1 Cougars Youth 1 Friendly

The boys faced a daunting task as they travelled to face local rivals Meadow Sports A who play in the Premier League some 3 divisions above our boys.

From the kick off Meadow showed their class forcing the pace. Some good tracking back by the midfield and desperate defending by Jack and Charlie kept the scores level. As the game progressed our boys started to grow in confidence and they started to threaten the Meadow goal. A superb corner from Benito flashed across the Meadow goal just out of the reach of 2 Cougars players. Cougars took the lead after some excellent work by Jack, breaking from the midfield he tried to beat 2 Meadow defenders,  despite loosing the ball he didn’t give up and forced the Meadow defender to panic and hit the ball against her own post Stefan following up poked the ball home. Half time 0-1 Cougars.

A momentary loss of concentration at the start of the second half by Cougars allowed a Meadow forward to break free in the area and fire home the equaliser.

From then on it became a great game of football with both teams playing end to end fast flowing attractive football. Chris & Archie were causing panic in the Meadow ranks with excellent link up play. Cougars went close on a number of occasions. The Meadow keeper denied Paolo twice, Matt and Archie with good saves. At the other end great defending by Benito, Luke & Charlie kept the lively Meadow forwards at bay.

The game ended 1-1 and the boys secured a well deserved draw against by far the best opposition they have faced this season. What was more satisfying than the result was the level of performance by all the boys who matched the opposition step for step.

A big thank you to our hosts Meadow who looked after the boys well after the game providing them with much needed hot snack

Ben, Charlie, Jack, Luke, Benito, Paolo, Chris, Archie, Matt & Stefan (1)

18/11/07 Cougars Youth 4 Potley Lions 0

The boys played host to a Potley team looking to continue their excellent start to the season.

The deadlock was broken within seconds of the start. A loose pass from a Potley player was pounced on by Archie who sidestepped a Potley challenge and coolly fired home into the bottom left corner of the goal 1-0 Cougars.

Cougars tried hard for the second goal. Archie went close on couple of occasions. Despite Cougars forcing the play with Benito and Paolo winning everything in midfield Potley always looked dangerous on the break and almost scored an equaliser against the run of play when their number 22 broke free in the Cougars area and fired a shot towards the near post as the opposition parents started to celebrate a goal Ben denied them with a stunning save at his near post.

The much needed second goal came after a superb flowing move. Potley tried to push forward but a great challenge by Jack stopped them. Jack then came forward with the ball and slid a pass to Archie, who looked up beat one defender and then squared it to Paolo who fired home into the roof of the net. A third soon followed when Archie shot from outside the area, some hesitation in the Potley defence allowed the ball to find the bottom corner of the net. So we half time came and it was 3-0 to Cougars.

The second half started and almost straight from the kick off Chris nearly scored a shot from the edge of the area hit the inside of the post but somehow stayed out. Much like the first half Cougars were in charge but had to be careful they didn’t get caught on the break by Potley and especially their number 22 who once again forced Ben into a good save this time above his head.

Cougars scored a fourth goal when Archie pounced on a goal kick and fired home past the stranded Potley keeper for a superb hat trick.

Further chances fell to Cougars the best fell for Paolo who somehow blasted over from 3 yards out.

It finished 4-0 to Cougars against a good Potley team which extends the boys unbeaten run to 10 games this season. Man of the match went to Archie who was back to his best and best effort was awarded to the whole team for an excellent all round performance.

Squad   - Ben, Jack, Luke, Benito, Paolo (1), Chris, Archie (3), Matt & Charlie

11/11/07 Cougars Youth 2 Guildford City Tigers 1

A depleted Cougars side travelled to face a tough looking away fixture against a Tigers team who had a 100% record coming into this game.

From the start Cougars were the better side with most of the play taking part in the Saints half. Despite the forwards showing a lot more commitment than last week we were unable to break down a very strong Saints defence. Jack when close with two efforts from outside the area, the first was saved just under the bar and the second went narrowly wide with the keeper beaten. Just as everyone was preparing for half time Cougars forced a corner. Benito drove the ball to the near post trying to find Paolo who was worrying the defence, instead it somehow rolled over the line into the net. The goal was awarded to Benito; So Cougars led 1-0 at half time.

The second half was similar to the first with Cougars forcing the issue, time after time it appeared that great work from Paolo, Matt and Chris would produce a second goal only to be denied by some good defending. As the half wore on it was apparent that our boys were tiring against a team who had the advantage of having 3 substitutes, so the next goal was going to prove vital. It came Cougars way when a poor back pass was chased down by both Chris & Matt showing great commitment; forcing the Saints keeper to handle the ball outside his area. From the resulting free kick up stepped Benito and fired the ball home. Saint’s then tried to go on the attack throwing everything at Cougars but found there way blocked by Jack & Luke. With about 2 minutes to goal a miss hit clearance from a Cougars player fell to a Saints player who tucked the ball home past Ben’s despairing dive. 1-2 Cougars led and despite seven very tired players they managed to see the game out and extend their unbeaten run to 9 games this season.

A great effort again this week from all the boys all of whom could easily have won one of the awards. Man of the match went to Benito who just sneaked it courtesy of his two goals. Best effort went to Jack who was again solid at the back.

4/11/07 Cougars Youth 0 Guildford Saints B 0

The boys were held to a goalless draw by a determined Saints team. Right from the start it was clear that some of our boys had been partying too late last night as time after time they stood off allowing Saints to play. When we did have the ball we seemed to be unable to pass. This allowed the opposition to grow in confidence. By the time Cougars woke up the first half was almost over. Paolo was unlucky when he pounced on a mix up in the Saints defence only to be denied by a good save.

The boys did improve in the second half and forced the play but for some reason our forwards seemed hesitant and were unable to get shots away.  On the odd occasion when Saints did break Luke and Charlie were able to stop them. The boys forced a series of corners and a goal would surely come. But Saints who could sense their first point of the season defended superbly. A shot by a Cougars player was saved at full stretch by the Saints keeper. With time fast running out Jack nearly broke the deadlock but was denied by another good save.

A disappointing performance from the boys who should have claimed all 3 pts.  They were a shadow of the team that we saw last week. Training will be interesting on Friday!

Man of the match was Luke and best effort was Matt.

Squad Ben, Archie, Jack, Benito, Paolo, Chris, Matt, Tim & Charlie

14/10/07 Cougars Youth 4 Farnham Dragons 0

Lorenzo asked for a big effort today from the boys after last weeks disappointing draw. It took just 20 seconds for them to respond. A well struck shot from Benito left the visitors keeper with no chance and found the back of the net (1-0).  Cougars created numerous chances the best of them falling to Archie but were unable to capitalise and increase there lead. Farnham tried to push forward but were denied by some good work from Ben between the sticks. Half time 1-0 Cougars.

After the first couple of minutes the second half was one way traffic with Cougars surging forward playing some nice football Again several chances were squandered before two goals from Chris and one from Luke settled the game in Cougars favour 4-0.

Another emphatic win for the boys. A little more composure in front of goal and they could have doubled the score line.

Man of the match went to Paolo and best effort went to Luke.

Rushmore Saints  1  Cougars Youth  3 Under 8 Seeding Match

Lorenzo mustered the troops shortly after dawn for the second seeding game of the season against an unknown Saints team.

The boys started as if they were still asleep allowing the Saints midfield to start strongly forcing Cougars back towards there own goal. Saints forced a corner that Cougars half cleared to a Saints player whose shot deflected off a Cougars defender and found the back of the net 1-0 Saints.

This seemed to wake the boys up, our midfield started win the ball and began to push Saints back. A ball fell to Benito who side stepped one player and fired a home an equaliser off the inside of the post. 1-1.

Cougars were now in charge and a second goal seemed inevitable but some outstanding work by the Saints keeper kept them out. One stop to deny Archie on the stroke of half time was outstanding.

The boys came out strong in the second half. Paolo and Benito were dominating midfield and Archie was causing havoc in the Saints defence. Chance after chance fell to the Cougars but a combination of good defending and excellent goalkeeping kept them out. With about 5 minutes to play the ball fell to Chris who coolly stroked the ball home to make it 1-2 Cougars.

A third followed when Archie beat a defender and tucked the ball home past the Saints keeper. 1-3 Cougars.

Another good performance from the boys who are improving every week. MOM was Benito and Archie was awarded best effort.

Teddington  1  Cougars Youth  5 Under 8 Seeding Match

The boys travelled to Bushy Park to play Teddington.

From the kick off the boys took control. Lorenzo’s vision of total football is starting to take shape.

The boys were able to pass the ball about in midfield and are now trying to get it out to the wingers. As Cougars pressed for the opening goal a long ball out of defence by Teddington found there number 10 who showed great strength to hold off the Cougars defence and scored totally against the run of play. 0-1.

Cougars pressed for the equaliser, Jack went close with a shot that whistled past the post. Cougars kept pressing, the ball fell to Paolo on the left wing, he cut inside and fired home with a shot across the keeper into the net. 1-1. Cougars were now playing great football. They took the lead when the ball was played out to Paolo who beat his marker and crossed into the area to find Archie who with a deft touch flicked the ball past the keeper. 1-2.

The second half began with Cougars pushing forward. They forced a corner. From the corner Charlie C showed great strength and determination to force the ball home. 1-3.

Paolo added a fourth goal with a shot from outside the area. 1-4. Cougars fifth came when another ball was played in from the left wing which Archie was able to turn in. 1-5.

Another fine performance from the boys with them all playing there part. Paolo was excellent and was named man of the match. Luke was awarded best effort.
