Woking Cougars FC Team Pages U7 Colts Season 2007 / 2008 SPL under 7 Div ? Woking Cougar Colts v Windlesham U7’s The colts played their third game against an improving Windlesham under 7’s team in the cold, wet and freezing temperatures of Surrey!! Due to the weather conditions and the amount of water lying on the pitch, there were only two pitches able to accommodate today’s match. The boys played on a slightly larger sized pitch which ensured they kept warm by trying to chase down the opposition. However, Windlesham seemed to cope better and quickly opened the scoring. The colts soon woke up and started pressing forward and had a number of chances to score but without any luck. Max continued to frustrate the opposition’s strikers and kept the colts in touching distance. As the pressure mounted the factors of the size of the pitch, driving rain and the organised opposition meant we ended up losing by 4-0. Man of the match award - Josh 9/3/09 Cougars 2-4 Mayford Athletic Cougars started the game strongly with some swift attacks down the wings by Kieran and Sid but the Mayford defense held firm. As Mayford started to apply the pressure, Jake and Joseph made a couple of well timed tackles, Joshua cleared off the line and Max pulled off a great save. After a series of Mayford corners Sid made a dazzling run the full length of the pitch, rode a couple of tough tackles and slotted in a perfect goal 1-0. The lead didn’t last long as Mayford levelled 1-1 with a shot outside the box and through a crowd of bodies. Cougars were determined to finish the half like they started and a series of passes between Jake, Zak, Kieran and Joshua finished with a goal mouth melee but incredibly no second goal for Cougars. The second half started with end to end action with some great wing attack and shots by Sid and Zak. At the other end Thomas & Joseph made some strong tackles whilst Kieran’s fresh air bought a great save from Joshua to deny Mayford. The second goal was soon to follow with a long range speculative shot from Sid taking the slightest of deflections 2-1 Cougars. However, Mayford rallied well and applied enormous pressure, twice hitting the post and bar. Finally an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box flew into the top corner 2-2. As the Cougars tired Mayford grew in confidence and 2 more late goals for Mayford harshly condemned Cougars to another defeat. Captain – Joshua25-11-07 Cougars Colts vs. Fleet Town Pumas This week the Colts were again faced with one of the more skilful teams who had previously beaten them well. Despite beginning the game with a loaded defence, the strategy was also one of taking advantage of the break with 2 strikers and a single midfield to run and feed the ball. Colts were faced with a strong attack from the off but the defence did a sterling job with Jake, Kieren and Joseph providing good security for the first ten minutes. Although this was positive, the onslaught from Fleet was too tough to cover and by half time, Colts were 3 – 0 down. In the second half the defence continued to protect well with Sam and Jake shining in their tackles and preventing many attacks. The forward team of Zak, Max, Josh and Sid (rotated) began to make several runs which culminated in a strike from Zak which was ‘helped’ over the line by Sid. In summary, Colts played well and did not deserve to be rewarded by such a bad scoreline. 11/11/07 Fleet Town Tigers 2 Cougars Colts 3 A victory for the Colts! At last, an outstanding win for the Colts with all 3 of the Colts goals coming in the first half courtesy of Josh, who scored 2 great goals and a third coming from Sid's well taken corner. Zak had several shots on goal too throughout the match and never gave up trying to score.Fleet Town Tigers managed to pull 1 goal back just before half time, despite some excellent defence from Kieran and Joseph. After their hard work in the first half, the Colts started to tire in the 2nd and Fleet took advantage, scoring another goal early on. Whilst the parents were willing the final whistle to blow, stalwart defending from Max and Jake, and some great saves from Thomas meant that the Colts got their first league win which was very much deserved! A true team performance from all the boys this week. Conditions
were cold, wet and very windy but the team played on. The colts
are improving every week and controlled the game in long periods
of the first half but were undone my some clinical finishing
from GPR. The half time score was 1-0 to GPR but not a true
reflection of how well the team played in the first half.
Particular mentions for Jake and Kieran who swepted up well in
defense. Second half started brightly for the colts and Sid
went on the ramage, scoring an excellent solo effort and
creating several chances for Zak. Unfortunately, our finishing
was not up to the usual high level. In the last 5 minutes, GPR
started to control the ball in our half more and scored two more
late goals to secure a narrow win.

14/10/07 Cougars Colts 2 Farncombe Youth 7 Moving on from the score line of the previous week, the Colts were up against another formidable team. There was a fully formed squad from the Colts and they began brightly with Sid and Zak making some good runs at their defence. The Colt’s defence did not stand up too well however and the first goal from Farncombe came from a long individual run and a long-range shot on goal. Continued pressure from Farncombe yielded 2 more goals despite some spirited defending from Max. Colts also had their only on-target shot on goal during the half coming from Sid. After some strong half time lectures, there was an initial quick shock-goal from Farncombe but the Colts quickly composed themselves and came out fighting with Sid creating and finishing two good goals. Getting feeds from Joseph Sid made runs from outside the box finishing well each time. 2 – 4. Despite these goals, Farncome did not give up and rallied well beating a sleeping Colts defence to bury 3 more goals before the final whistle went. Captain - Sid Man of the Match - Joseph 7/10/07 Cougars Colts 1 Goldsworth Park Rangers 6 Our first league match was against a local team that had friends of the boys in. GPR started with a flourish and had a good squad who worked well together to dominate play. They were quickly up two goals as a result of sustained attacks on the Colts’ goal. Despite this Kieren was doing some good work in defence and running the ball up the field when he won it. Thomas also made an excellent save of the ball from a good GPR shot. Regardless, GPR scored another 2 goals before half time, one a long range shot and the other a dribble from the edge of the area and a first-rate individual effort. After half time, Colts came out with better structure and we began to attack their goal. Sid was making good runs and had a shot on goal while Joseph was doing the same on the other side of the pitch. Even though we were pressing, GPR came back with another 2 goals, one from a handling error from the Colts’ keeper. Still Colts kept the pressure on and Zak missed an open goal from Joseph’s excellent cross. Zak finally got a deserved goal from a good strike straight at the keeper and which took a deflection and into the net. Improvement needed from the team after their strong performance last weekCaptain Joseph Man of the Match Sid 30/9/07 Cougars Colts 3 Frimley Green Jaguars 2 Last seeding game before the leagues were handed out so we were looking for a win to ensure we were put into our ‘rightful’ league place. The Colts weren’t overawed with the Frimley team despite them playing well from the whistle. Honours were even initially, but Colts started to show their presence with a shot from Zak on their goal. The defence duo of Kieran and Max were performing well at the back with Thomas having little work to do but handling well when he did. Joseph was also doing well supporting the striker with some strong feeds. The pressure paid off with Sid making good runs and finally hitting the top of the net from a tight angle. After this, Sid continued with his attacks and also delivering balls to Zak who made several shots with one hitting the post. In the second half, Frimley came out with new determination but this failed to dent Colts who continued to pressurise their goal too with both Sid and Zak making shots on goal. Zak hit a strong shot from the centre of the area to the top of the net. Frimley countered and got a goal back from a corner. We left a defensive hole on the far side of the goal which was exploited well. Frimley then got a second from a shot at the edge of the area – 2-2. It’s to the Colt’s credit that they failed to give in and, with four minutes remaining, the team pressured and delivered the ball to Zak who refused to give up dribbling it past the keeper. The final whistle came as some relief for a well-fought winCaptain Max Man of the Match Max 23/9/07 Cougars Colts 1 Byfleet Village 3 This was Cougars Colts third seeding game and we were fresh from a win last week. We knew Byfleet would be a harder side to conquer and so we started the match with a strong defensive line-up. Kieran and Thomas played particularly well in this role. This worked well with our keeper Sid having virtually nothing to do despite Byfleet living in our half. Colts managed attacks on the break and the first goal was scored after a shot on goal from Max was saved but not collected from the keeper and Zak collected the put-in. In the second half, the formation was broken in favour of a more attacking line-up. While this worked well and bought the attacks from both sides to an equal number, we were slow in clearing the ball and too bunched in our area. This lead to a succession of cheap goals despite some good saves from our 2nd half keeper (Kieran). Byfleet also had a penalty which was put over the crossbar. All together, a lesson for both the coach and the boys and some things to work on in training next week. Captain Kieran Man of the Match Thomas 16/9/07 Cougars Colts 8 Meadow Sports 1 For our second seeding game the Colts attacked from the start and we were rewarded with a quick goal by Zak over the keeper’s head. The attacking continued with Sid making two good runs with a strike across goal and another which hit the post. Joseph also delivered a good strike, hitting the post. Meadow Sports’ occasional attacks were pounced upon by Kieran who was having his first session in goal. With the Colts settling, several good runs by Zak with accurate feeding by Sid were stopped by the alert Meadow keeper. Any attacks by Meadow were dealt with efficiently by Haris and Max. With the score at 1-0 at half time, Colts shifted to fourth gear and slotted 3 past the Meadow keeper. Sid across the goal from the right under the keeper, Sid’s pass to Zak who delivered a clinical goal and finally Zak hit his hat-trick into the top left corner of the net despite the keeper getting his fingers to the ball. Kieran was delivering down the other end too with a couple of fine covering stops. Despite the ‘goal-fest’, Colts had a defensive lapse and allowed Meadow to get one goal back. In the final quarter, Colts found another gear and started to apply real pressure. Zak shot under the keeper, followed quickly by Joseph who shot low into the left of the goal. Pressure was relentless with further shots on goal from Max, Joseph and Zak. This paid off with Zak hitting the post and then netting the rebound for his fifth and Joseph getting a brace with a difficult tight angle from the left. A good and improved performance from the Colts team. Captain Zak Man of the Match Zak 9/9/07 Cougars Colts 0 Fleet Town Pumas 6 This was the Colts’ first game together as a team and the boy’s (and Manager’s) nerves were initially apparent. Fleet showed none of these nerves from the outset and we were quickly down 3 goals within the first five minutes from some skilful and strong play from the opposition. The boys responded well however and after the initial shock, settled quickly with Sid and Zak having strikes on goal. From that point, the Colts played well with Sid having 2 shots on goal (one hitting the post). In defence, our keeper Max made an excellent save with Thomas making some crucial tackles. In the second half, the team kept the pressure on with several shots on goal which were all stopped by the Fleet keeper. Our midfield was kept strong with Joseph providing excellent linking play. With our new found confidence however, we were caught out with Fleet scoring a 4th goal on the break, a fifth via a great individual run and finally a 6th. In the last 10 minutes the boys again found reserves with Sid having a great individual run and forging a good save from their competent keeper. Max once again made a couple of outstanding saves and Kieran providing some excellent cover to ensure the score remained the same. Overall, for a first outing against strong opposition, the Colts played well, had a great time and are already beginning to gel as a team. Bring on the next test… Captain Max Man of the Match Joseph |
